Many issues about sustainability of tourism were raised in INTERSMARTS fields research. Tourism infrastructure is challenged by overdevelopment, loss of green spaces, inefficient maintenance of public areas, insufficient parking, inadequate pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. Environmental concerns like inefficient wastewater treatment further threaten sustainability. Efforts to implement sustainable infrastructure are hindered by weak institutional oversight, slow administrative processes, lack of digitalization, and poor communication between authorities and communities. Overcoming these challenges requires improved transparency, digital tools, professional development, and stronger citizen involvement. While innovation remains limited, the region must prioritize adopting smart technologies, upgrading municipal systems, and enhancing digital competencies. Sharing best practices across the Black Sea Basin through training and joint initiatives will support the region’s sustainable growth.
The final results and conclusions shall be published in the Needs Assessment Reports of the INTERSMARTS Network.
